(Shanghai, February 20, 2024) The Hilong Group’s project known as the "Development and Application of High-Strength Sulfur-Resistant Drill Pipe for High-Sulfur Ultra-Deep Complex Wells" earned the gold prize and was listed among the winning projects of the 35th Shanghai Excellent Invention Selection Competition that were recently announced. This competition is jointly organized by the Shanghai General Federation of Trade Unions, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Office, the Communist Youth League Shanghai Committee, the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, and the Shanghai Invention Association. Hilong’s achievement follows the project's previous recognition in the sixth batch of high-tech achievements transformation in 2023 and its special project approval by the Shanghai Economic Commission for Intelligent Manufacturing and represents yet another honor this project has received.
The project, jointly applied by the Shanghai Hilong Tubular Goods Research Institute and the Shanghai Hilong Oil Drilling Tools Co., Ltd., addressed technical challenges in existing drill pipe technology, such as low torsional strength, poor sulfur resistance, and low load-bearing capacity. Technological innovation breakthroughs in special material design, heat treatment technology, manufacturing processes, thread structure design, and high-precision machining allowed the team to develop a series of high-grade sulfur-resistant drill pipe products with high sulfur resistance, high strength, high toughness, and high torsional resistance. These products have been applied in a large overseas oilfield, demonstrating leading product performance and technological advancement, both in terms of Chinese and international standards.
Hilong Group stated that this award reflects the Group’s drive to promote technological innovation in the field of oilfield equipment, strengthen the accumulation and protection of core intellectual property rights, and advance the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. The project has achieved full localization of new materials, processes, and production technology equipment. In doing so, Hilong has broken through technical barriers in harsh oil and gas drilling environments and driven the development of high-sulfur oil and gas fields. This enables deeper drilling, longer horizontal well sections, and more efficient and safer operations. Additionally, the project's products have gained recognition in the international high-end market, showcasing the competitiveness of Chinese manufacturing in the international high-end market and bringing significant economic benefits and engineering application value to enterprise development.
Approved by relevant municipal government agencies and jointly organized by multiple units and associations, the Shanghai Excellent Invention Selection Competition is an important scientific and technological award established by various groups in Shanghai. Since its inception in 1987, the competition has played a significant role in promoting scientific and technological progress as well as economic and social development in Shanghai.
